Multi-frame Storytelling

Multi-frame Storytelling

This assignment was to edit existing photos to create new pieces with new themes. The new pieces that resulted, work together to evoke thought about our connection to the day to day world. In this series of five, I used a common theme of portraits and then added objects from everyday life to them. This results in a connection with the world around us. I used black and white filters for this series to create depth and complexity. I then added black borders to tie the two photos together and make them more cohesive. The vibe throughout this series is dark and contemplative.

Portfolio

Portfolio

For this project I decided to focus on a British street artist named Slinkachu. I researched his style of photography and tried to copy it. He is best know for a project called The Little People Project and the photographs in that series are the ones I focused on. His photos convey complex narratives about human conditions. The steps he uses to creating his photographs are: use train set figures for characters, think up the story you want to tell, set up the scene by thinking of it as a miniature film set, after shooting the scene, walk away and leave the installation for someone else to find. Slinkachu leaves the scene after the picture has been taken. His set blends into the city, but when viewed up-close a new universe is revealed. Through his photos he tries to emphasize all of the alienation and loneliness of modern life through his photos. Human nature is a major theme that he attempts to communicate. Although I did not leave my installations after I took the photos I still followed his recipe and tried to demonstrate his themes through my own photos. In this series I used the same construction train people to set up my scenes. I shot all my photographs very close up and tried to make them look as real as possible. In each of my pictures, I positioned the construction people in a way that demonstrated a story. This was challenging to demonstrate. Out of the pictures I took for all  four drafts, the twelve I chose for this portfolio I think demonstrate the theme of human nature the best.

Draft 4

Draft 4 Slinkachu project

For this Draft of my project I used the same recipe as the Slinkachu and the my last 3 drafts. Slinkachu's photos convey complex narratives about human conditions. The steps he uses to creating his photographs are: use train set figures for characters, think up the story you want to tell, set up the scene by thinking of it as a miniature film set, after shooting the scene, walk away and leave the installation for someone else to find. Although I did not leave my installations after I took the photos I still followed his recipe and tried to demonstrate his themes through my own photos. Due to the bad air quality this week I was unable to take as manny photographs on the street. Instead I looked inside Drew to create narratives.

Draft Two Slinkachu Project

Draft Two Slinkachu Project

I missed a lot of class this week and was only able to take a few pictures on Thursday. I came up with four photographs. The first two were successful and last two were not. The two that were not successful were unsuccessful because of the background. There was a car behind the subjects that made their size a present factor. The car put them into scale and showed how small they really were.

Avedon Portraits

Avedon Portraits

In this assignment, we were tasked with trying to copy the style of Richard Avedon. He had a distinct style to capture raw emotion in portraits. To do this, he photographed only in black and white and showed only the subjects face in a square frame. He used a blank white background and rarely used props, so that the subject would stand out.  He also achieved this by making sure that his model didn't pose and looked directly at the camera.  In my photographs, my subjects were Danny and Ozzie. In each photo, I tried to capture genuine through their eyes.
